Section 01 / Direct questions

12. When should we bring in a specialist rather than continue ourselves?

Data Reserve research deskSection 01Page 12 of 16Last updated 4 November 2026

Bring in a specialist when a material decision depends on evidence or capability your team cannot produce reliably before the deadline. Scope the engagement around the unresolved issue and a concrete deliverable.

Problem Specialist to consider Deliverable to request
Mixed or acquired rights US copyright / media counsel Cohort-based rights opinion and exclusions
Broad AI grant or indemnity Technology-transactions counsel Negotiation issues and executable drafting
Unsubstantiated buyer access Commercial diligence researcher Permissioned checks and claim-to-evidence register
Sensitive material or deletion promise Security / privacy / ML specialist Tested exposure and exit assessment
Unclear preparation quote Archive engineer Pilot scope, acceptance sheet and fixed assumptions
Non-reproducible statements Finance / royalty specialist Contract-linked exceptions register

Ask who pays the adviser, whether supplier fees or ownership interests exist, and whether these affect the shortlist. Do not assume an “independent” label settles conflicts. A useful engagement can recommend a smaller pilot, a hold or no transaction; it should not promise licensing income.
