When is specialist help worth commissioning?

Data Reserve research deskSection 12Page 9 of 13Last updated 4 November 2026

Bring in a specialist when an unresolved issue is material to the next decision and the internal team lacks the time or expertise to resolve it. Cost savings are possible but not guaranteed; require a scoped deliverable and compare its cost with the decision at stake.

Specialist Trigger Commission a concrete output
Copyright/technology-transactions counsel Mixed contributor rights, broad grants, sublicensing or difficult exit terms Cohort-specific issue analysis and negotiated rights schedule
Privacy/security specialist Sensitive data, unfamiliar recipients or complex controlled access Disclosure assessment and tested release controls
Independent commercial researcher Supplier demand or transaction claims cannot be corroborated internally Claim-to-evidence register, reference findings and alternatives
Data engineer Formats, provenance, quality or updates require a technical pilot Capped test, acceptance report and production scope
Finance/licensing operations support Fee bases, deductions or reporting cannot be reproduced Reconciled model, exception ledger and reporting specification

Ask who pays the adviser and whether an introduction produces a fee. Obtain written disclosure of actual engagement and referral relationships before relying on an independence claim.
